Harmonic Distortion and its Prevention

Harmon measurement and mitigation

Harmonics can be created within a low voltage (LV) distribution system by non-linear load equipment such as variable speed drives, uninterruptable power supplies, welders, electronic lighting units and switch mode power supplies.

Harmonics can manifest themselves in the system as either voltage distortion or current distortion each causing its own particular problems. These can include:

  • Neutral overload
  • Cable overheating
  • Capacitor stressing
  • Nuisance tripping of relays and circuit breakers
  • Increased energy consumption

to name but a few.

Harmonic Mitigation can be achieved by a variety of means dependent on the particular type and severity of harmonic issues encountered.

Specialist skills and equipment are needed in order to measure and assess harmonic distortion in your LV systems and to assist you in developing the best and most economical solution to your unique problems. Efficiency Direct Ltd will visit the site and attach the recording equipment. Data collected will then be analysed and presented within a detailed report including recommendations to reduce any harmonic issues discovered.
