About the service

We Know The Importance Of Delivering The Best Customer Experience.

Automated monitoring and targeting (aM&T) is essential for businesses looking to achieve good energy management. The energy monitoring theory being; that if you can measure energy, you can monitor it; if you can monitor energy then you can manage it.

Simply put, a building that is properly monitored and managed will run more efficiently and that means reduced consumption, lower business energy spend and lower co2 emmissions for your business.

Energy monitoring and targeting is recognised worldwide as a proven methodology that can effectively help businesses to manage energy and achieve energy efficiency.

With many organisations looking to reduce their environmental impact, businesses are looking to better understand their energy use and associated carbon emmissions.

Our energy monitoring services can help businesses to get to grips with energy usage and co2 emmissions.

Continual monitoring can help oragnisations to measure, quantify and verify savings and reductions over time.

Energy monitoring and targeting can be broken down into 5 steps.

  1. Energy measurement
  2. Energy monitoring and data analysis.
  3. Identify potential energy savings & implement energy saving initiatives
  4. Energy bench marking and setting energy targets.
  5. Energy reporting and reflection

Energy measurement & Data Collection

The first step to monitoring and targeting is energy measurement. Businesses need to measure energy accurately. One method of doing this is ensuring the building has reliable metering and sub metering.

Energy measurement can vary in sophistication. At the very least, businesses should be measuring their energy by taking monthly/regular manual meter reads from the main tariff meters. This will, at least, give businesses a method of monitoring their monthly energy use. The enery figures collected can be compared with the utility supplier invoices to check that the business is being billed correctly.

The next step up would be to ensure that the utility tariff meters are fitted with AMR so that half-hourly data can be collected from the main tariff meters within the building. The half-hourly data can be collected by your supplier and or energy manager. Having AMR and Half-hourly data is very useful and allows for accurate and in-depth energy monitoring and utility consumption analysis.

The better the metering system, the more detailed the energy monitoring can be. The more efficient the sub metering within a building, the more effective the M&T can be. Sub meters enable businesses to collect consumption data for a particular area, floor or particular supply. M&T analysis can be carried out on the sub meter data to really understand your business’s energy consumption.

For example, it is possible to break down an entire building’s energy usage into a pie chart which shows individual usage for each floor within the building.

Energy Monitoring & Analysis

Once business energy data is being collected, either in the form of manual meter reads or AMR/half-hourly data, someone will need to be monitoring the energy usage and analysing the energy consumption. This could be done by an in-house energy manager or and energy consultancy, like Efficiency Direct.

To be able to reap the benefits from energy monitoring and targeting, the consumption data needs to be constantly monitored and analysed to identify the energy savings. This task usually falls to the Energy Manager within the business, however, our energy consultants have a vast amount of experience using a variety of automatic monitoring and targeting (aM&T) software packages and so we can offer advice and guidance. Our energy consultants can also help when it comes to choosing the right aM&T package for your business and understanding how to get the most from it.

Energy Reporting

The third step in energy monitoring and targeting is using the data from the M&T package to compile an energy report. Our energy consultants are able to save businesses huge amounts of time by producing bespoke monthly energy reports. Using your business’s existing energy monitoring and targeting package, we can compile a comprehensive, informative energy report. We have found that these reports have been particularly useful to Energy Managers and Facilities Managers and those businesses looking to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard, ESOS accreditation and ISO 50001 among others.

By compiling a monthly energy report, it encourages on-going energy monitoring within the business. Also, presenting the data is an important part of the monitoring and targeting process. It is essential that the information is presented to the relevant people who can act on the energy saving recommendations to reduce energy consumption.

The information needs to be presented in understandable and engaging way. This information can then be used to help set targets for energy reductions and plan future energy saving initiatives for the business.

Business Energy Targets

The final step of energy monitoring and targeting is the targeting element. Energy targeting is a dynamic process and requires on-going monitoring. Business energy targets need to be able to evolve and be both realistic and achievable, taking into account any likely savings from your improvements in ‘good housekeeping’, maintenance and other energy initiatives.

Energy targeting encourages the drive for energy efficiency and energy savings. Our energy consultants can assist with:
